About Elliptical Trainers

Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Fabulous! So glad I bought this!, By Elizabeth

I was looking at the $800 Schwinn Elliptical until I realized that the one praised in Consumer Reports was the 2005 version not the 2006 version. I also read some bad reviews so I started looking around until I found this one. I'm so glad I did! It's excellent. I was able to assemble it in less than two hours (even though I'm not very handy) and it worked well right away. It's very smooth, not very loud, and just works perfectly. I'm so glad I didn't pay an extra $600 for a more expensive model.

The resistance is not very significant as everyone else mentioned (there are only eight settings) but I like it without a huge amount of resistance. I don't know how many pounds it will hold but I've been told that the difference between the expensive elliptical machines ($3K and up) is that they are made for gyms so they hold up to 450 lbs, work despite constant use, and come with more extensive warranties.

Some of the Stamina's features are actually better than the one I used at the gym (for example, the electronic monitor holds your information for four minutes if you stop using it while most machines only hold your info for 30-120 seconds before resetting). It also works with 2 AA batteries (which are included) so you don't need to put it near a plug. The only things that are missing are a little ledge to hold a book and a water bottle holder but I suppose one could add them with a little creativity. I find that this one is perfect for home use.

Easy Machine, By K. Ratcliffe

Although I'm not sure that I would call it whisper quiet, at least not by my definition, it's is by no definition loud. I really like this machine. It was easy to put together, easy to understand display and easy to use. There are 8 resistance settings and even setting 2 you can feel the machine working. I like that there are no wires or clip-ons for a heart/pulse monitor, simply hold onto the handles and you get that information. It is heavy so make sure you have someone to help you get it inside but all in all, this machine is a winner!

Cross trainer is excellent in quality. Just as good, if not better then like excercisors of different manufactures and brands.I am quite happy with the price and quality and not to mention the fast delivery.

Very nicely engineered - a great buy, November 12, 2008, By a customer

The Stamina 55-1771 is very nicely engineered and built, with sturdy construction, quiet running, good read-out features (including pulse rate) and the right movement action. I had to apply a few quirts of WD-40 to some of the pivot points to quiet an initial sqeek, but then you wouldn't want it shipped with lots of oil on it. It is a bit more complex to assemble than your usual out-of-the-box, pop-together job, but certainly well worth it considering what you get for the price. At 100 lbs, I won't be lugging it around the house, and it does not collapse, but it certainly is exactly what I wanted for a nice workout.
